The Authority is responsible for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the Tyne and Wear Emergency Planning Unit.

In accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act 2000, the Authority has established a Standards Committee which seeks to promote and maintain high standards of conduct by Members of the Authority and to assist Members to observe the Code of Conduct. Any breaches of the Code should be reported to the Standards Board for England which will determine whether the complaint should be investigated and if so by whom.

The Clerk to the Authority maintains a register of interests of Members of the Authority which the public may inspect by contacting the Clerk to the Authority at Civic Centre, Sunderland (+44 (0) 191 5531009). Subject to the Member's consent, the public may inspect the register of gifts and hospitality.
