Emergency Plans - Media Relations

Media Relations in respect of a Major Incident
It is recommended that good relationships be established with local representatives of the Press on a “normal business” prior to any event, as such associations can forestall any antagonism which may be generated under highly emotive circumstances of major incidents.

There is clearly a need for a planned unified response which will involve news editors, press, radio and television reporters, emergency service officers, local authority staff, government press officers and the affected agency or carrier.

Regional Media Emergency Forum
The North East Regional Media Emergency Forum (RMEF) is a voluntary grouping of professional media representatives of the emergency services, Government agencies, local authorities, utilities and the professional broadcasting and news media itself. Emergency planning professionals are also represented.

Its purpose is to foster understanding about the roles of all concerned should a major incident occur in the region and to spread good practice. It has no authority over its member organisations.

The RMEF would bring together the key partners in delivering public information and Media Relations during major emergencies.

Connecting in a Crisis

Is a set of arrangements put in place by the BBC nationwide to allow emergency announcements to be broadcast to give information to the public in the event of an emergency. The BBC web-site states that Connecting in a Crisis is intended to create closer working relationships at a local level between BBC staff and those charged with a duty of care for their communities’.
